How do we make a virtual ham radio convention?
We make a virtual ham radio convention by using vFairs, a virtual environment service company, that provides us our virtual convention center for hosting the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo.
Like a real convention center, we have a lobby, exhibit space or exhibit hall, poster gallery that we call the Product and Project Gallery, and a virtual auditorium where our speakers use vFairs technology to provide live and "semi-live" presentations with live Questions and Answers. As the "Expo" has evolved, we now have video lounges called "Kumospace", from the company with the same name, to provide a fun background for group video conferencing. We combine all of these elements to make the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo.

Kumospace - Our Face to Face, "Eyeball QSO" Virtual Environment
We use an additional virtual environment from Kumospace, Inc. to create lounges, living rooms, classrooms, and seating areas to have one on one and group video conferences. Like Zoom, hosts in our Kumospace lounges, can share their screen, broadcast lectures to the entire room, or have intimate conversations with convention visitors.

A Poster Gallery we call Project Gallery
Share your latest ham radio project, technology, operating mode, DXpedition, or history in our new Project Gallery. You submit your presentation article, video, or slideshow to our Project Gallery for live feedback using the on-line Q&A text chat system. This is another way to share with the amateur radio community without making a live presentation. To submit your project to the gallery, click on the button below. Accepted submissions to the Project Gallery will receive one Free Ticket to the Expo.
For Exhibitors and Vendors we have a Product Gallery
We use the same poster gallery technology and space to mix in exhibitor products in paid spaces. This allows them to promote individual products in a different area of the Expo from the exhibition hall. These are full service video, image, PDF download kiosks with live text Q&A during the live weekend of the show. Product Gallery visits are recorded by provided exhibitors after the Expo.

About the ExpoAmateur radio is like a big circus. It has its main tent with three rings in the center. In those rings could be Contesting, DXing, and Rag Chewing. However, amateur radio now has a "midway of a thousand smaller tents" according to Eric Guth, 4Z1UG, founder of the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo, and host of the QSO Today Podcast, a interview program featuring the most interesting amateur radio operators. It is exactly this midway that the "Expo" was founded to explore.
The Covid-19 Pandemic closed ham radio conventions, hamfests, and monthly meetings all across the World in 2020. It was because of these closures that Eric, 4Z1UG, got the idea to create an on-line, and virtual convention that has all of the elements of a real ham radio convention, similar to the most notable live conventions. The First QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo was in August 2020 where over 15,000 amateurs attended on the Expo weekend, attending on their computers over the Internet instead of in-person. Over 80 presentations were made, with live Q&A on Zoom webinar, and attendees could come back over a 30 day on-demand period to view the recorded presentations that they missed. We discovered something unique in August 2020, from surveys that we made following the expo. Sixty percent of the 15,000 attendees, almost 9000 hams do not go to live expos, preferring to stay at home. The Covid-19 Pandemic has made this all the more important. Four QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo have been produced over the last two years. We come back twice a year to make the best ham radio educational event. We return on September 17-18, 2022. |
